This page discusses some topology aspects of a GeneWeb base.
Isolated persons
GeneWeb is structured around families. In this context, a person is either:
- a parent
- a child
- a witness to a personal or family event
- a relation to a person (god-parents, ...)
If a person is neither of this cases, which may happen when a family is suppressed for instance, the children or spouses, if not otherwise married, may end up being isolated.
When saving a base, GeneWeb explores systematically the list of existing families, and will output in the GWformat all the persons attached to each family. THis process ignores isolated persons which will disapear from the base.
Paths
GeneWeb offers a mechanism to determine the path in the base between two individuals. This path may be:
- restricted ascendants
- inclusive of alliances
- shortest path through all relations (alliances, brothers/sisters, parents)
In the display of such paths, you may notice that some of the vertical bars between two individuals are in fact clickable links. If you click on such a bar, the path passing through this individuals will be suppressed, and another path will be displayed (if available).
Connected components
If no "shortest path" exist between two individuals in the base, then it means that each individual belongs to a different connected component of the base. Within a connected component, all pairs of individuals are connected through a "shortest path".
The tool connex
provides information about the connected components of a base.
It is available only through the command line interface and may or may not be included in your distribution!
connex
usage ...
One of the parameters of connex allows the suppression of a specific connected component.
