In some languages, first-names and last-names may have different spelling depending on their place in a phrase. These situations are called "declensions". This is the case in the czech language (one of the languages supported by GeneWeb).

For instance, the following chunks in english:

… married to Vladana
… cousin of Vladana

translate in czech as::

… si vzal Vladanu
… bratranci Vladany

The firstname Vladana has several forms: « Vladana » is called nominative, « Vladanu » accusative, « Vladany » genitif.

Data capture

In the lexicon for this language, and in the captured data, these cases are designated by letters between two colons :.

In czech, accusative and génitif are designated by letters :a: and :g:.

In a form where you want to enter a first-name or a last-name subject to declension, enter the nominative form, followed by the two other forms as in:

Vladana:a:Vladanu:g:Vladany

There are two possible shortcuts:

  • a form beginning by + means "start from the nominative form: Adler:g:+a means that the genitif form for "Adler" is "Adlera"
  • a form beginning by - means "start from the nominative form, but subtract one letter from the end" ( (-- means subtract two, etc...). The form Vladana:a:-u:g:-y is valid for the case described above

Affichage

When displaying the data about one person, the nominative form is usually displayed. the other forms are used only in the context of full expressions where the language requires their use.

If a language without declension has been selected, the nominative will be the only form visible

The full form, with declensions data appear in the update form.

Language specific documentation

There is no documentation on each language specific cases. Look at linguistic sites, available examples in other genealogy sites and possibly some examples in the lexicon.
